The Théâtre de la Photographie et de l’Image is located in the former Théâtre de l’Artistique, in the heart of the city of Nice. This space, which has retained the charm and refinement of the Belle Epoque, was assigned in 1999 to the mission of promoting and disseminating the art of photography and the image. Six rooms offer their walls to all trends, ranging from photo-journalism to plastic photography, from 19th century photography to current digital techniques.
Temporary exhibitions
Throughout the year, monographic or thematic exhibitions are programmed. Some having been the subject of an order, contribute to the enrichment of the collection.
The collection
One of the missions of this institution is to bring together a photographic collection on Nice and its region through research of old documents but also by entrusting to authors-photographers missions of inventory of the human, urban, historical and industrial heritage of the city.
This is how the City of Nice has enriched its heritage with 40 original prints by Charles Nègre made in Nice between 1863 and 1865. allowing the public to rediscover Nice and the daily life of its inhabitants captured during the second half of the 19th century. ; landscapes and genre scenes borrowed from everyday street life that reveal a picturesque and lively city.
Cultural mediation
Guided tours of the exhibitions are organized for primary, middle and high school students by appointment.
Conferences and screenings around Photography and the image, meetings with photographers or critics enliven the various events that mark out the year.
The documentation
The documentation center offers more than 3,500 works devoted to Photography for consultation through monographs, exhibition catalogues, analytical essays, reviews and technical works. The Micro-gallery offers DVD viewing, a preselection of websites dealing with photography and access to image banks from major photographic institutions.
